MBS Sets New Deadlines For Students

ST. JOHN'S, Antigua - Primary and secondary school students that have yet to sign-up to participate in the recently launched Physical Activity and Nutrition (PAN) Project initiatives now have two more weeks to become involved.

The Medical Benefits Scheme, (MBS) has announced extensions to the due date of three of its recently launched PAN Project initiatives, namely the National Team Skipping Rope Competition, the Primary Schools Arts Competition and the Secondary Schools Dollar Smart Healthy Recipe Competition. School Principals and Physical Education Teachers now have until Friday, 20th March, 2009, to indicate to the MBS their teams for the National Teams Skipping Rope Competition. Students have also been given a similar deadline to submit entries for the Primary Schools Arts Competition and the Secondary Schools Dollar Smart Healthy Recipe Competition.

Several exiting prizes have been identified for the winners in all three PAN Project activities. All competitors in the National Teams Skipping Rope Competition will receive medals, and trophies will be awarded to the first, second and third place winners. The top performing school will also receive a trophy. The prizes for the Primary School Arts Competition include a digital camera, art lessons, movie tickets, books and arts supplies. Winners for the Dollars Smart Healthy Recipe Competition will receive cooking utensils and electronic kitchen appliances.

The PAN Project is a series of planned activities and programmes that target children of the school attending age. The project is being spearheaded by the Medical Benefits Scheme in collaboration with the Ministries of Education and Health to improve lifestyle habits. This initiative comes following MBS's release of startling data on the detection of Type II diabetes in children in Antigua.
