MBS Enhances Its Diabetes Programme

The Medical Benefits Scheme (MBS) will tomorrow Tuesday, 19th January 2010, introduce to local health professionals a new wellbeing program geared towards providing people living with diabetes with skills to improve their coping abilities and with knowledge to better manage the disease.

MBS has teamed up with the University of Florida to export the University's highly successful programme "Take Charge of Your Diabetes" to Antigua and Barbuda as part of initiatives to move beyond providing treatment and prevention services. "Take Charge of Your Diabetes" (TCYD) is an in-depth extension-based, collaborative educational program targeting adults with type 2 diabetes. The program is designed to improve blood glucose control and reduce long-term health risks of persons with diabetes by providing the information and the motivation needed to adopt positive behavioral changes.

The "Take Charge of Your Diabetes" program is used state-wide in Florida as well as in many other states within the USA with great successes in reducing hospital admissions and the complications associated with diabetes.

A five member specialist team from the University of Florida arrived in Antigua yesterday, Sunday, to conduct at the Medical Benefits Scheme a three day training workshop where the knowledge on how to execute the "Take Charge of Your Diabetes" program will be transposed to local health care providers from the public service, Mount St. John's Medical Centre and MBS. The workshop will run from the 19th to 21st January, 2010. Today, the team from the University of Florida toured the island's primary healthcare facilities and the Mount St. John's Medical Centre.

The Medial Benefits Scheme is the agency responsible for the implementation of the "Take Charge of Your Diabetes" program in Antigua and Barbuda redefining its role in healthcare delivery.
